چکیده

The digital X-ray detectors often generate stripe artifact in the sinogram which in turn creates ring artifact in the reconstructed micro-Computed Tomography (μ-CT), C-Arm CT, and most recent dental CT images. Such ring artifacts not only obscure image details in the regions of interest but also mask the whole image with some artifacts. In this paper, novel techniques are proposed for the detection and suppression of ring artifacts in the sinogram domain. As ring artifacts are manifested as edge creating stripes, single or contiguous, in the sinogram, they are detected based on a set of specific conditions derived from the second derivative of the sinogram and a new self-adaptive threshold computed from its first derivative. A new method for the detection of wide band contiguous stripes using the mean curve and multilevel polyphase decomposition of the given sinogram is also proposed here. For the correction of ring artifacts, novel variable window moving average (VWMA) and weighted moving average (WMA) filters are proposed in this work. To evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed algorithm, various types of synthetic and real μ-CT images are used. Experimental results show that the proposed method can detect ring artifacts with high accuracy and thus remove them more effectively without imparting noticeable distortion in the image as compared to other reported techniques.

Metal Artifact Reduction of Dental Fillings in Head and Neck CT Images

Introduction: The issue of metal artifact and its reduction is as old as the clinical use of computed tomography itself. When metal objects such as dental fillings, hip prostheses or surgical clips are present in the computed tomography (CT) field of view (FOV), make severe artifacts that reduce the image quality and accuracy of CT numbers. They can lead to unreliable ...

An improved method for the removal of ring artifacts in high resolution CT imaging

In high resolution computed tomography (CT) using flat panel detectors, imperfect or defected detector elements cause stripe artifacts in sinogram which results in concentric ring artifacts in the image. Such ring artifacts obscure image details in the regions of interest of the image. In this article, novel techniques are proposed for the detection, classification, and correction of ring artif...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

A Ring Artifact Correction Method: Validation by Micro-CT Imaging with Flat-Panel Detectors and a 2D Photon-Counting Detector

We introduce an efficient ring artifact correction method for a cone-beam computed tomography (CT). In the first step, we correct the defective pixels whose values are close to zero or saturated in the projection domain. In the second step, we compute the mean value at each detector element along the view angle in the sinogram to obtain the one-dimensional (1D) mean vector, and we then compute ...
